TRANSPARENT EXTENSION

Town House renovation with new transparent extension and daycare center

This renovation of a town house and new extension is located in Sledderlo, Belgium. It is a transparent volume consisting of two building layers. The use of split-levels ensures the view on the garden is kept, looking from the existing building through the new extension. Furthermore it is a solution to connect both the living area and the nursery with the kitchen in the existing house. Separating this transparent volume from the two existing garden walls allow sunlight to enter both spaces. To create an open view, the structural columns were placed in the middle of each side of this rectangular volume rather than in the corners. As a result, both the daycare center and the home have a private outdoor space. The covered terrace is directly connected to the garden by an external staircase. The outdoor playing area of the daycare center sunken into the ground creates a separate and safe space for the children to enjoy some fresh air. This space is connected to the garden with a wide playful staircase.
